Hopefully this is for conservation. Nature rebalances and recycles everything in nature, only humans are so arrogant (globally) that everything is, every living thing, is to serve humans.

what do they need these animals for?
They are the conservation herd for Canada. Pretty much all of the plains bison in Canada (in parks and on farms) can trace their origin to this herd. This continues today with bison being reintroduced in Banff, the Blackfeet Nation Montana and Russia. They are probably the only conservation herd in the world that are pure bison (no cattle genes) and disease free.
